Agriculture Engineer

Division               : Programs.
Location               : (1) in Ad-Dhalea and (1) in Shabwah.
Reports to           : Project Manager.
 
Organization & Background:
A humanitarian, independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization that works across Yemen. The organization provides direct assistance for conflict-affected populations, IDPs, host communities and vulnerable groups in the conflict areas. The organization, in partnership with international agencies, takes action during crisis situations in order to alleviate the sufferings of the most vulnerable groups. The organization promotes durable solutions for conflict-affected populations and helps to restore services, education, economic, wellbeing and health.
 
Job Purpose:
The Agriculture Engineer will provide technical support and field supervision for organization's agricultural development project. Key responsibilities include supervising and training farmers, overseeing the quality and distribution of agricultural inputs, facilitating knowledge transfer, monitoring and evaluating project activities and outcomes. The position will also play a key role in the project's agricultural development initiatives, including the establishment of Farmer Field Schools (FFS) and the linkage of producers to markets and service providers. The Agriculture Engineer will work closely with local agricultural directorates, extension services, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment and integration with existing systems.
 
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Support and Field Supervision:
  • Supervise and follow up with beneficiary farmers throughout all stages of agricultural operations, from land preparation to harvest.
  • Deliver technical trainings to farmers on modern agricultural technologies and techniques, such as protected cultivation, irrigation systems, and post-harvest practices.
  • Develop Bills of Quantities (BoQs) of agricultural inputs, tools, materials, and equipment according to the targeted farmers' needs.
  • Receive, inspect, and verify the quantity and quality of agricultural inputs like seeds, fertilizers, etc. against customized specifications.
  • Inspect and ensure the quality of agricultural equipment and infrastructure such as protected houses, irrigation systems, and machinery.
  • Review input specifications, quantities and participate in their analysis.
  • Conduct field work with farmers, supervise and follow up on all activities according to the project plan.
  • Ensure safe, productive, and sustainable agricultural practices that maintain soil fertility and efficiently use water.
  • Facilitate the transfer of agricultural knowledge and skills among beneficiaries.
  • Promote the adoption of environmentally friendly technologies and techniques.
  • Conduct regular field visits to monitor and oversee the implementation of activities.
  • Coordinate with field supervisors, community committees, and agricultural directorates.
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by the line manager.
 
Agricultural Development:
  • Participate in the rapid, gender-sensitive, livelihoods/value chain assessment to identify relevant entry points for women, men, youth, and persons with disabilities.
  • Engage with community leaders and agricultural extension agents to identify and register project participants for Farmer Field Schools (FFS).
  • Support the establishment of FFS, provide customized hands-on training on sustainable agronomic practices, and facilitate practical sessions and knowledge-sharing.
  • Identify, train, and support community-based extension workers to ensure the availability of qualified staff and the sustainability of agricultural activities.
  • Link project participants to market and service providers, including wholesalers and retailers, to enhance the marketing of their products and services.
  • Encourage the establishment of informal networks among producers to facilitate cross-learning, market opportunities, and business collaborations.
 
Capacity Building and Stakeholder Engagement:
  • Work closely with local agricultural directorates, extension services, and other relevant government and civil society stakeholders to align project activities and ensure integration with existing systems.
  • Support the development of community-based extension workers to enhance local training capacity and contribute to the long-term sustainability of agricultural interventions.
 
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting:
  • Participate in initial assessment missions and distribution/site selections.
  • Track project indicators at all levels (activities, results, objectives, and goals).
  • Collect, analyze, and use data on crop yields, water use efficiency, economic return, and project outcomes to adaptively manage and improve implementation.
  • Compile and present data-driven reports to project manager, donor, and stakeholders.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of project activities, including weekly and monthly narrative reports.
 
Safeguarding:
  • Read, understand, and adhere to the organization’s Safeguarding Policy, sign the organization’s Code of Conduct, and strive to promote a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination, harassment, and abuse in all working environments.
  • Report any concerns about the well-being of a child or vulnerable person and report any concerns about the behaviour of the organization’s representative in relation to safeguarding.
 
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working in the agricultural sector, particularly in field-level operations.
  • Proficient in modern agricultural technologies, methods, and practices.
  • Experience working in the project's target areas (Ad-Dhalea and Shabwah governorates) is preferred.
  • Specialized training or course in "field supervision" or related agricultural topics.
  • Prioritize candidates from the local region.
  • Familiarity with working with organizations and donor-funded projects.
  • Moderate proficiency in spoken and written English, with the ability to produce quality reports.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, facilitation, and negotiation skills.
  • Strong team management and staff motivation abilities.
  • Experience in participatory approaches and understanding of gender dynamics in agriculture.
  • Willingness to travel frequently to the target governorates.
