Aal Hammaiyd area is located in Marib Governorate in which many of the resident families are very poor and a large proportion of them are IDPs. Besides, most used water is contaminated with bacteriological and chemical pollution that happened because of the unsafe water storage methods used by the residents. Thus, due to the lack of awareness, people continued to use this water for drinking, cocking, and hygiene which negatively affected their health. The immediate effects of drinking contaminated water can include contraction of cholera, typhoid fever and dysentery, while the long-term effects include serious damage to the kidney, liver, bones and brain. “My daughter suffers from severe kidney pain and I can’t afford the treatment for her.” One of the IDPs mentioned.
Therefore, funded by the YHF, YFCA conducted a provision of Aqua tabs 33 mg NaDCC for Jerry cans disinfection and chlorination campaigns at HHs level with hygiene promotion sessions. In addition, water quality surveillance volunteers were testing the water quality to measure the efficiency of the chlorination campaigns. Moreover, they kept monitoring the quality of the main water source in the area to make sure that safe water reaches the concerned residents. It is worth mentioning that 2006 beneficiaries of IDPs, host communities, and the most affected population have benefited from this activity. On the other hand, YFCA conducted awareness sessions to raise hygiene awareness among the beneficiaries and emphasized the strong connection between using clean water and keep being healthy.
The activity of providing aqua tabs affected positively on the beneficiaries’ health, as they can fetch clean and decontaminated water from Aal Hammaiyd well. Besides, they are more aware of the most appropriate methods of water collecting, storing, and purifying.
Not only were they thankful for this intervention and happy about how easy it is to access to safe source of water but also, they declared that a burden was lifted from their shoulders that their children got healthier
