“God bless YFCA’s workers who provided us with new equipment and supported us with incentives so that we were back to work and kept our city clean” One of the workers said.
Qatabah City is one of the most populated areas in Al-Dhale’e Governorate, with an estimated population of 117,618 in 2011. Hundreds of displaced families chose Qatabah city to displace to, as it considers the nearest safe place. This huge displacement wave had led to the accumulation of massive amounts of garbage, especially surrounding the displaced people’s (IDPs) camps. And this in return, directly threatens the life of IDPs and their host community.
Since the government could not pay the cleaners, they could not continue doing their job in cleaning the area. Subsequently, this was considered the main reason for the garbage accumulation. “Our children are exposed to serious disease infections due to this severe level of environmental pollution” one of the IDPs mentioned. Hence, and to mitigate the risk, YFCA being funded by YHF has conducted solid waste collection and disposal campaigns for seven months with a rate of three campaigns per month in Qatabah district. Those campaigns were conducted through the Cleaning and Improvement Fund in Qatabah by providing the needed support and required incentives for 20 workers. It is worth mentioning that the number of beneficiaries who got benefited from cleaning campaigns was 21,548.
Thus, people in Qatabah city including IDPs sites are grateful and feel safe living in a clean environment and guaranteed it would not become a fertile environment for diseases and epidemics. Especially in this period, as Yemen suffers from many diseases related to hygiene which makes it a great achievement. Beneficiaries were grateful for YFCA’s big role in cleaning their city. Moreover, they hope that YFCA will continue its support so that they can continue living in a good environment and keeping healthy.
