The Opposing Violence Against Women campaign is concluded

The participants stated that the GBV takes several forms such as domestic violence, sexual abuse, workplace violence, verbal abuse, physical violence, denying education of girls, denying inheritance of girls, early marriage, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).  

Her Excellency Mrs. Houria Mashahour, the Minister of Human Rights stated that the early marriage is a barrier to continuing education for females; she mentioned the efforts exerted by MoHR to advocate the parliament to enact a law about the safe age of marriage.

In his part, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen Mr. Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed stated the importance to oppose GBV and give women all their legitimate rights. He added that deprivation of females from education is considered as the worst form of GBV, he praised the rule of MoHR and involved INGOs to oppose GBV in Yemen and advocate to enact a law determine the safe age of marriage.

The UNFPA representative in Yemen Ms. Lina Chiristianson said that violence against women is against human rights and that human rights could not be global unless the rights of women are considered. She added that early marriage can affect females greatly and endanger their lives and their babies during pregnancy.

The deputy of the EKN ambassador spoke about the rights of all people to have life security and enjoy all rights. She added that EKN in Sana’a implements several development programs to empower women to access to the reproductive health and family planning services.

In the other hand, YFCA in cooperation with UNFPA arranged a caricature gallery about GBV. The gallery include couple of masterpieces and caricatures that advocate to oppose GBV in the society; the gallery was led by couple of cartoonists and fine artists from several governorates.  The gallery was heavily attended by ministers, officials, INGOs and media.

The executive manager of YFCA stated that conducting this gallery is to mark the celebration the world day to oppose violence against women and the 16-day campaign to oppose GBV. He concluded by saying that the conducting of this gallery was very crucial to enhance the community awareness towards the issues of women.
