Safe Motherhood Project

A project implemented with joint funding from the British Community Fund and YFCA. The Japanese government as well, through its embassy in Sana’a has contributed by providing an ambulance. Where AGFUND contribution was used to supply some midical equipmints. The main objective of the project was to reduce the maternal mortality in the targeted areas through studying the health situation and services in the scope of the project to determine the appropriate strategies and methods to improve the maternity health situation.
 
Project Duration: 2002-2007

Project Objectives
- Increasing the number of childbirths in the presence of trained attendants.
- Increasing the use of modern family planning methods.
- Ensuring the provision of the services of childbirth and maternity health to   
 the community.
- Urging for policy changes and displaying the steps that ensure the provision
 of safe delivery and maternity health care.


Scope of Projec

The project covers 20 districts in the governorates of Sana’a and Amran

Project Activities

Providing the Maternity Centre (Safe Motherhood Specialized Hospital) “at a premises owned by YFCA ” with all modern medical equipment and appliances to provide delivery services and maternity care (around-the-clock obstetric emergency services) and supplying it with an ambulance to transport complicated cases from the rural areas to the hospital to ensure efficient service.
Building, rehabilitating and equiping (16) health units in targeted areas to provide reproductive health, maternity and childhood health services and referring complicated cases to the Safe Motherhood Specialized Hospital.
Qualifying and training (50) community midwives selected from the project areas through a 2-year diploma programme, and providing them with the necessary equipment and tools as to ensure qualified and well-trained “service providers” to secure reproductive health and maternity services in targeted areas. 
Conducting a baseline survey to recognize the level of services and medical awareness.
Conducting a study to identify the causes of maternal mortality.
Conducting a study to identify the obstacles that prevent mother’s access to health services. 

Due to its efforts and contribution towards Motherhood and Childhood issues, YFCA was honored the membership of the Higher Council for Motherhood and Childhood according to the republican decree NO. 53 issued in 1991.
