Sa’adah / Munabeh / Health: Ned al-Baraq area, Awfrah village
In the outskirts of Sa'adah governorate lies the village of Awfrah, within Munabeh districut where its residents suffer difficult economic and social conditions and lack of basic services, due to the nature of the rugged mountainous terrain in the region that formed and constitute additional burdens on citizens.
One of the most important services that the region lacked was health services, where there is no nearby medical center serve the citizens who suffer silently, and that the only medical center there has long been closed and neglected due to several factors including war conditions and continuous shelling.
People of the area were very thrilled when the Yemen Family Care Association (YFCA), funded by Yemen Humanitarian Fund (YHF)/ OCHA worked to refurbish the one and only health center in the area.
Fatima, one of the residents of the village and the mother of three children - two girls and a boy - the eldest of whom is seven. She came to the center to receive treatment for several diseases that she and her children suffer from.
"For more than four years I have been suffering from diseases," said Fatima. "I have stomach disease, my weight has decreased, and every period of time has got a severe diarrhea. They told me [the doctors] here at the center that I have severe and long-term diarrhea. Earlier we did not have anyplace to go for treatment but now, thanks to YFCA, we can be treated in a nearby facility with no cost at all. I used to visit this facility for seven months now to follow up on our cases”. She added.
When asked about her health after receiving the treatment, Fatima responded: "[Praise be to Allaah]. My health is now greatly improved. I do not have any stomachache, I do not have diarrhea [or anything]. We are visiting the [center] on monthly basis and every time we feel lucky to have this [facility] in our district”.
A female caregiver in the center reflected that “The diagnosis and tests conducted for Fatima confirmed the presence of infections in the stomach, pancreas and duodenum in addition to dysentery, we gave her the necessary treatment and we followed her condition during the past period”
"The center provide its medical services to treat the most common diseases in this area, most notably maternal and child diseases, reproductive health, natural and caesarean operations, Tuberculosis, schistosomiasis, malaria, dysentery, giardia, meningitis, diphtheria, acute diarrhea, as well as skin diseases such as psoriasis, measles, leishmaniasis, fungi, bacteria and other common diseases in the region” she added.
We left the area, but we did not leave the eyes of the lady and her three children, her suffering mixed with expressions of hope revive in their hearts generated by the establishment of such community projects that take care of them and their illnesses and gave them the feeling that they are not alone and there are people who work to help them despite all the difficulties.
